Road of Death - Bolivia

North Yungas Road or Bolivia’s Road of Death, which is 70 km and almost 3,600 meters down to narrow curves, is widely accepted as the most dangerous road in the world. The narrow road with the fog and vapours have taken many drivers’ lives.
In 1994, 26 vehicles went over the edge - an average of one every two weeks. In 1995, the Inter-American Development Bank listed the road as the most dangerous on earth. The new road circumvents the worst sections but hundreds of vehicles use the old dirt track as a short cut. In each year since it was built, up to 200 people have died on this highway: coca-growers, soldiers - and the odd tourist. Now a major Bolivian tourist attraction, mountain biking down the road is extremely popular but still very dangerous.

The Russian Highway from Hell - Lena Highway

M56 Lena Highway or The Amur-Yakutsk Highway – connects Yakutsk with the south. The road runs 1,212 kilometres south to Newer. It was built in stages between 1925 and 1964. Although it is a federal highway, it is just a dirt road. When frozen in the winter, this makes for an excellent surface, and the posted speed limit is 70 kilometres per hour. However, in the summer, with any significant rain, the road turns to impassible mud that often swallows whole smaller vehicles. Driving upon these roads in summer when the snows have melted seems like a very stupid idea. But the authorities never even meant for the Lena Highway to be used in the summertime. Yakutsk can only be reached by ferry in the summer.
